Isabella Karle Isabella Karle proved that "direct methods" could be used to solve crystal structures; her achievement was crucial for the acceptance of "direct methods" by crystallographers worldwide. She received many honors, including the 1988 Gregori Aminoff Prize from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the 1993 Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science from The Franklin Institute.
